Oil Painting

At NMHS we use Winsor Newton oil paint.  Students will learn about the qualities of oil paint and practice different painting techniques.  Working in oil paint is an advanced medium.  Oil paint is a type of slow-drying paint that consists of particles of pigment suspended in a drying oil.  Oil paints have been used in Europe since the 12th century and were more widely adopted as an artiistic medium in the early 15th century.

There are many surfaces that oil paint may be applied to.  Students will use canvas paper, canvas board, and stretched canvas.

Watercolor

Watercolor is a painting method in which paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-soluble vehicle.  Watercolors are usually transparent, and apprear luminous because the pigments are laid down in a relatively pure form.  Painting is executed in layers going from light to dark.  Areas that must remain white are blocked out using a resisting agent and later removed. Most watercolor paintings are completed on cold press, hot press, or rough paper.  Different weights of the paper determines thickness.

Acrylic

Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion.  Acrylic can be diluted with water or modifed with a number of gels, pastes, and other media to create different finishes.  Acrylic paint was first used in the 1950's .
