AP Studio Art

Prerequisites are:  Completion of Advanced Studio Art with an A or higher.

The AP Studio Art Course is a teacher reccomended college credit art course.  It is the highest level art couse offered.  Students who are interested should speak to their art teacher or guidance counselor.

Below is the AP outline that shows the 3 areas of focus with their descriptions (Concentration, Breadth, Quality). Each number in this outline counts as one art piece, giving a total of 28 works of art. Completing 28 artworks is extremely time consuming, as many of these will take several hours to complete. If your child is interested in art but works at a slower pace, this may not be the course for them. Please speak to your child to ensure that they are fully aware of the amount of work to complete within the time period allowed. By accepting to take this course, your child understands that it is mandatory to complete the artwork by the beginning of May of the school year that it is taken on (this is when the AP work is due to the College Board).

Your child must also agree to complete artwork at home, afterschool, and during free time throughout their school days in order to complete the AP artwork. If your child is an athlete or participates in after school activities and cannot attend extra help sessions in the classroom afterschool, they must agree to complete work at home on their free time. Your child has approximately 32 weeks to complete the 28 art pieces. They should produce about one art piece a week in order to stay on track.

AP Studio Art concentration options are: Drawing, 2-Dimentional Art, and 3-Dimentional Art.  Students must pay a fee to enter an AP course or have the fee waived if they recieve free or discounted school lunch.  If the student recieves a grade of 3 or higher in AP, they will recieve credits that may apply to college and the fee will be returned. Students are required to take part in peer and self critiques frequently throughout the course.  There is a writing portion that must be submitted along with the student's Concentration section (Students will practice writing artist statements).  They are encouraged to research artists, art movements, and concepts used in art.  Students make independant desicions about their work with aid of the teacher.
